Dear sailors and friends, we are about to archive this year event, but most importantly we’ve started to plan 2011, which will take place from Monday March 7th to Saturday the 12th. Let me take the opportunity to sincerely thank everyone that participated in the 83rd BACARDI Cup and the inaugural BACARDI Miami Sailing Week. Following months of planning, and with the help of many, we were able to organize a terrific event with 84 Stars, an increase of 20 boats over 2009. The new classes overall entries were satisfying for an inaugural event, and we look forward to welcome many more in 2011. I was happy to receive positive feedbacks from the competitors, officials and sponsors. Thank you for the comments, we will most certainly take them into consideration and make the necessary changes. Mark your calendar and see you in Miami next year!

MIAMI, FL (March 13, 2010) – American Skipper Rick Merriman and Crew Phil Trinter were able to come out on top with a first place victory on the sixth and final day of Star Class sailing helping push the U.S. team to the top spot overall in their first ever BACARDI Cup win. With strong gusty wind conditions puffing up to 24 knots on a clear sunny day, at least five Star Class masts were snapped off navigating strong winds including the day's early leader Bermudan Skipper Peter Bromby and Crew Magnus Liljedahl, giving Merriman-Trinter the chance to take control of the session, coming out ahead in the eighty four boat field to win one of the sailing world's most prestigous accolades, the coveted BACARDI Cup. With Merriman-Trinter taking the win, the end of the day found Irish Team Skipper Peter O'Leary second place overall with a first place finish on the third day, and American Skipper Andy Horton and Crew James Lyne taking third overall through a weeklong run marked by solid finishes in the top ten consistently throughout the week.

With wind becoming an increasing concern early in the afternoon, the decision was made to not hold an additional Star Class race to make-up yesterday's cancellation due to windy weather, and in its final day, the BACARDI Cup settled for five instead of six total sessions. As the Star Class BACARDI Cup competition concluded, BACARDI Miami Sailing Week was able to continue with Melges 20 and Melges 24 as well as Viper and J/24 all able to compete.

"We had good speed off the start staying with everyone, and then we were able to hit one tack that edged us out ahead of Andy Horton and got us trailing Bromby. We were right behind him (Bromby) until he broke his mast trying to jib in one of the bigger puffs at the mark," comments BACARDI Cup winning Skipper Rick Merriman. "Then the wind luckily backed off for us a little and we were able to survive the jib and after that, we just focused on sailing conservatively. We played with a couple good shifts and protected the left, making sure we didn't let anyone get out in front of us. The wind was pretty light for first three quarters of the BACARDI Cup, and then big pressure came down the last part of the day and the boats behind us got this huge puff and surfed all the way up until we finally got the pressure. Luckily, we were able to stay out in front of everyone and take the win."

An internationally renowned sailing tradition since its founding in Cuba in 1927, the 83rd annual BACARDI Cup hosted world class sailors from twenty-three different countries from across the world, all competing in the Olympic caliber Star Class competition. The BACARDI Cup Star Class competition also served at the marquee event for the inaugural BACARDI Miami Sailing Week, which also included new classes competing in Miami, such as the Melges 20 and Melges 24, as well as the Viper and J/24 classes.

"The BACARDI Cup has always been one of the most prestigious honors in sailing, and winning today is huge," Continues victorious Star Class Skipper Merriman. "You look at the list on the Trofeo BACARDI and it is an amazing group of competitors. This is always a tough one to win here in Miami in the wintertime. There is always a big fleet and the race is always filled with the best of the best sailors. Without a doubt, Phil and I would put the BACARDI Cup right up with there with very highest honors in sailing. We were happy to come out on top and we're looking forward to the future as we continue competing."

The inaugural BACARDI Miami Sailing Week also saw Skipper Jeff Eckland take his boat Star to the top spot overall dominating Melges 20 sailing in a fifteen boat field, while Skipper Donald Wilson won out in the standings in the Melges 24 class in his ship Convexity to take the top spot among nine other boats. In the twenty boat Viper class, American Skipper Lee Shuckerow won the Viper North American Championship Saturday edging out Bermudan Skipper Somers Kempe by three points. In other BACARDI Miami Sailing Week classes, J/24 standings were topped by American Skipper Trish Walker in Scouts' Pride in the six boat competition.

"With the close of the 83rd annual BACARDI Cup, we would like to thank the world class competitors coming from around the world to compete as they honor one of sailing's grandest traditions in the Trofeo BACARDI," comments BACARDI Miami Sailing Week Chair Gabriele Pedone. "With the always generous support of BACARDI, we were pleased to see this eighty-three year old legacy continue on as we started a new tradition this year with the first ever BACARDI Miami Sailing Week. We were pleased to see BACARDI Miami Sailing Week begin as the BACARDI Cup did so long ago in 1927 with a time honored tradition of friendship and camaraderie and look forward to 2011."

A looming, yet vicious storm system lurked to the north of Miami, Fla. as the fifteen-strong Audi Melges 20 fleet anticipated a second day of racing. Nothing could hold back the Audi Melges 20s and Melges 24 fleets as race one kicked off on time. The careful and watchful eye of PRO Bruce Golison and his alert and attentive race committee diligently watched the radar and cautiously put the fleet into sequence with the possibility that they might not race should his sources advise of incoming torrential weather.

The first race was set at 205, Course 4, 1.0 nm with just a little less than 10 knots of breeze. Marc Hollerbach (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) on Fu jostled for position early getting called over at the start, while Chuck Holzman (Farmington Hills, Mich.) on Flyer tried to squeeze in at the pin, only to get hooked on the anchor line of the pin boat. The fleet was quick to fan out and head right for pressure. Ecklund tacked out to the right with a fast lane around the top in first, followed by Peter Keck (Lake Geneva, Wisc.) on M&M Sailing in second, then John Arendshorst (Holland, Mich.) on Blink. As the fleet approached the gate, the Race Committee called for shortened course to finish. Ecklund took the win, Keck and Arendshorst finished respectively. Ecklund leads going into tomorrow's racing by four points. In second overall is Keck and Wynsma hangs in for third.

The Melges 24 fleet completed an entire race with Doug Fisher (Sarasota, Fla.) on USA-515 taking the win. In the overalls however, Jennifer Wilson/Donald Wilson (Chicago, Ill.) on Convexity lead the highly competitive group with USMCA Southeast District Governor Steve Kopf (Charleston, S.C.) on Blur trailing in second place by one point. In third is Cary Siegler (Newport, R.I.) on Rock Steady.

MIAMI, FL (March 12, 2010) – With a storm system strong enough to force the BACARDI Cup Stars as well as Viper and J/24 classes competing as part of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week out of Biscayne Bay for the day, the fifteen boat Audi Melges 20 and ten vessel Audi Melges 24 fleet were able to start on time and power through a short, swift session. With Melges 20 Skipper Jeff Ecklund's STAR taking the top spot, Skipper Peter Keck on his M&M Sailing vessel and Blink Skipper John Arendhorst were able to slip into number two and three top spots for the day. With the final leg of sailing for BACARDI Miami Sailing Week scheduled for tomorrow, Ecklund's STAR is in the top spot in the overall standings, while Keck's M&M Sailing remains in second and Skipper Eric Wynsma on SuperFly is in third overall. In Melges 24 news, the fleet was able brave the weather to finish their race with Skipper Doug Fisher of Sarasota, FL on USA-515 taking the day's victory. The Melges 24 leader board has Jennifer Wilson/Donald Wilson of Chicago, IL on Convexity in the top spot overall with Skipper Steve Kopf of Charleston, SC on Blur trailing slightly in number two by just one point. Rock Steady is in third with Skipper Cary Siegler rounding out the top three.

Look for more updates on the final standings for all classes as the BACARDI Cup and BACARDI Miami Sailing Week continues Saturday, with Star Class, Melges 20 and Melges 24, Viper, and J/24 classes all looking to compete

Inclement weather has cancelled the fifth day of sailing at BACARDI Miami Sailing Week for the Star Viper and J/24 classes. The Melges 20 and Melges 24 will be on the water. BACARDI Miami Sailing Week comes to a close tomorrow Saturday, March 13th. Awards for all classes, including the top prize, the BACARDI Trofeo, for the Star Class team will be awarded at the awards party tomorrow at Peacock Park from 4 p.m. - 9 p.m.

MIAMI, FL (March 11, 2010) – Continuing a run tempered by cautious optimism in a field of highly skilled Star Class teams, Skipper Andy Horton and Crew James Lyne once again remained on top in today's overall standings after the fourth day of the BACARDI Cup. Placing first yesterday overall and then again today in a session marked by steady increased wind that tapered off towards the end of the day, the U.S. Team was able to keep the top spot in standings as Italian Skipper Diego Negri and Crew Nando Colaninno won the day's first place victory, helping the team ascend to number six overall. With many top contenders working hard to keep in the race for the BACARDI Cup, Thursday saw Ireland's Skipper Peter O'Leary and Crew Stephen Milne again stay in second place overall, with American Skipper Rick Merriman and Crew Phil Trinter also remaining where they were yesterday again today in third. Brazilian Team Grael-Seifert also stayed put in fourth with U.S. Team McChesney-Zwingelberg holding onto fifth.

"Going into it, just like yesterday, we wanted another top ten finish today. Luckily, James and I were able to get past a bad start where we struggled a bit at first, and were able to make a good comeback. We just kept pushing, staying focused, and all of a sudden we found ourselves gaining ground and able to slide in for a strong finish," comments Skipper Andy Horton. "We're pleased but also know after tomorrow's race, everyone gets to throw out their poorest finish, which is really going to change the field dramatically. After tomorrow, everyone's going to get a whole lot closer. Hopefully we'll sail another good race. All we can do is see where everyone lands after that."

In addition to the Star Class competition for the BACARDI Cup, the Viper 640 Pan-American Championship at BACARDI Miami Sailing Week continued with American Skipper Lee Shuckerow and Crew Brad Boston and Eric Vigrass edging out Wednesday's winners for the top spot overall. U.S. Skipper Barry Parkin and Crew John Logue and Sue Parkin were able to settle for a still solid second place finish in the twenty-one boat Viper field.

As for other classes out for their first day of sailing on Biscayne Bay, Skipper Jeff Ecklund was able to get the top spot in the Melges 20 standings in his boat STAR, among fifteen competitors while American Skipper Donald Wilson and his crew were able to take their boat Convexity to the top of class in Melges 24 with ten vessels competing. In the J24 class, Scouts' Pride Skipper Patricia Walker and her crew were able to steer their way into the top spot in a six boat field.

MIAMI, FL (March 10) – Skipper Andy Horton and Crew James Lyne edged up from their fifth place finish yesterday in the standings to secure the top spot Wednesday in the third day of Star Class sailing for the Trofeo BACARDI. Wind conditions increased slightly later in the afternoon to about a 10 knot high in a field that was spread out in comparison to the tight group yesterday. With three more days of Star Class sailing to go in the BACARDI Cup, Wednesday's midway point has U.S. Team Horton-Lyne in first place overall with Ireland's Skipper Peter O'Leary and Crew Stephen Milne taking second. Yesterday's leader, American Skipper Rick Merriman and Crew Phil Trinter faded slightly with a still solid third place finish today while Brazilian Skipper Lars Grael with Crew Ronald Seifort placed fourth and first day victors American Augie Diaz alongside sailing phenomenon Crew Bruno Prada came in fifth place overall to round out the top five in the BACARDI Cup standings.

"The breeze was light again today, but we're expecting the wind to become stronger later in the week with the weather. Today, the real challenge was getting over to the wind, which was tough today, but we managed to spring out of jail and really get out there," comments Skipper Andy Horton. "We're trying to approach this like any big regatta by really staying focused and not being too risky. This is a strong fleet of competitors and you have be careful out there. The breeze is supposed to pick up a bit later this week and we're going to continue to try to do our best and see where we are at Saturday."

Wednesday marked the third of six total days of Star Class sailing as competitors reach the halfway point in BACARDI Cup competition. The BACARDI Cup will run on Biscayne Bay through Saturday, March 13th as the flagship event for the inaugural BACARDI Miami Sailing Week.

The day's sailing also included the start of the Viper 640 class competition for the Pan-American Championships at BACARDI Miami Sailing Week. The Viper 640 victory today went to U.S. Team Skipper Barry Parkin, who came out on top in the 21 vessel field alongside Crew John Logue and Sue Parkin. Viper 640 competition will continue through Saturday, March 13th.

Look for more BACARDI Cup Star Class competition continuing tomorrow along with the Viper class through Saturday. BACARDI Miami Sailing Week will also host J24, Melges20, and Melges24 classes beginning tomorrow.

MIAMI, FL (March 9) – Light wind and a late start marked the second day of BACARDI Cup Star Class competition on Biscayne Bay with Skipper Rick Merriman and Crewmate Phil Trinter taking the overall top spot in standings with Brazilian Skipper Lars Grael and Crew Ronald Seifert securing the day's victory. In a session marked by a lot of movement and weak variable winds, the Grael-Seifert win was followed by a solid second place finish by Merriman-Trinter with Bermudan Skipper Peter Bromby and Crew Magnus Liledahl taking the third spot. Two more United States teams followed behind with Skipper Peter Wright and Crew Nathan Quist finishing fourth and Skipper Andy Horton and Crew James Lyne finishing out Tuesday's top five in the quest for the BACARDI Cup.

With a second place finish today and a fourth place finish yesterday, Merriman-Trinter were able to look sharp in the overall standings leading with the most points as the BACARDI Cup continues tomorrow on through Saturday, March 13th as the class headlining BACARDI Miami Sailing Week.

"The last two days have been real light and the wind shifts really haven't been that large, but they've really mattered. We found the pressure we needed and felt we had a good start to the day, which really helped along with a big gain in the second run," comments Skipper Rick Merriman. "It's been difficult out there, but luckily we've been able to stay consistent. We've really seen a lot of interesting movement because the conditions have been so light and shifty."

After two days of competition, overall standings include Merriman-Trinter as the current points leader with Horton-Lyne in second place. Stout-Peters is currently in third overall with McChesney-Zwingelberg in fourth and fifth place going to Team Melleby-Mrrland.

As the BACARDI Cup Star Class continues, tomorrow will mark the beginning of the Viper 640 class North American Championship as part of the inaugural BACARDI Miami Sailing Week.

The second day of BACARDI Miami Sailing Week and Star Class racing is fully underway on Biscayne Bay. With slightly overcast skies and a warm, light breeze, all eighty-four Star boats have returned to the waters.

Who will lead today, in the second full day of the BACARDI Cup? Will Diaz/Prada come out on top again?

Be sure to check www.miamisailingweek.com at the end of day two for full race results, images and video from this exciting event!

MIAMI, FL (March 8) – Accomplished Floridian Skipper Augie Diaz teamed up with Brazilian Crewmate and 2007 Star World Champion Bruno Prada to open the first day of the BACARDI Cup Star Class competition with a win, taking the pair one step closer to the coveted Trofeo BACARDI. The day’s victory by Diaz-Prada, which took place among a field of eighty-four vessels in a light easterly wind up to 5 knots, was the first in six days of Star Class sailing. The Star Class started the weeklong BACARDI Cup competition, which also doubled as the opening event to the first ever BACARDI Miami Sailing Week, a new addition to the celebrated eighty-three year old sailing tradition.

“I’m not sure we can keep this pace up, but winning today is very exciting and a big step in the right direction. Today, it was all about the guy I was standing next in Bruno. He was a magician out there and I made sure to not do anything to hold him back,” comments Monday’s Star Class victor Augie Diaz. “The real key to the win was how we were able to approach the marks. We also were extremely lucky in the fact that we didn’t make the same mistakes that some of the other crews did out there. We’re pleased with today, but know we have a lot more to do before we go all the way.”

Skipper Jud Smith and Crewmate Brian Fatih were able to capture second place out on Biscayne Bay with Skipper Gustavo Lima and Rubrio Basilio following close behind in third. Rounding out the top five, Rick Merriman and Crew Phil Trinter and Peter McChesney with Crew Shane Zwingelberg were able to solidify their positions in fourth and fifth place respectively for the first day.

With the Star Class on point to headline the competition among several other classes competing in different events, 2010 BACARDI Miami Sailing Week will also include J24, Melges 20, Melges 24, and Viper Classes competing in various regattas.
