February 16, 2010 ISSUE #4

Dear Sailors and Friends,

Once again it’s time for an update on the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week as we near competition time! Yes, that’s right, we are only 19 days away from the regattas!

ENTRIES ARE STRONG!

A great thank you to all the competitors that have registered already as we have over 100 boats from all over the world that are ready to race in the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week and the BACARDI Cup. The lion’s share goes to the STAR Class with over 65 boats registered for the 83rd running of the BACARDI Cup. This is another great result and commitment to racing considering that the Star World’s in Rio de Janeiro were just held this past January causing logistic issues for foreign participants. Viper Class is building up nicely with over 20 entries registered, but many more expected to come for their North American and Pan American Championship. The Melges 20, Melges 24, and J24 numbers have been steadily growing in the last week and we’re confident we will see more coming… so keep registering!

SLAM ON THE TOP

Congratulations to Team ORACLE BMW RACING and SLAM on winning the America’s Cup and bringing the Cup back to the United States. The same great and high tech gear that helped BMW ORACLE Racing win the American’s Cup is available for the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week.

This is the last call to get your team’s personalized SLAM wear… time is running out for SLAM to produce it for you so email Filippo Bovio here or call (305)885-9580

SHAKE-A-LEG COMMUNITY DAY

On Sunday March 7th Shake-A-Leg will host a Community Family Day. Participants, family and friends are invited to take part in the event. Miami Sailing Week is supporting the family day by organizing a special opening of the Color of Wind Art Exhibit with photographer Cory Silken. Cory will be talking about photography and sailing and through his work and images will inspire the group. Youngster will then have the chance to go out on the water with SAL fleet for the rest of the afternoon. Miami Sailing Week and all of you who donated funds during registration will sponsor part of the Community Family Day, and for this we thank you.

Additional information can be obtained by calling S.A.L Miami (305)858-5550 or visit their website shakealegmiami.org.

COLOR OF WIND POSTER

In anticipation to Cory Silken’s Color of Wind Art Exhibit Presented by BACARDI, we would like to anticipate the image that was chosen for the official poster. The show will be opening on Sunday March 7th at 4:00PM with a cocktail reception and will remain open daily through March 13th from Noon till 6:00PM. SUPPORTERS OF BACARDI MIAMI SAILING WEEK

In this edition we want to recognize the Coconut Grove Sailing Club for their support in the BACARDI Miami Sailing Week.

It was founded in 1946 with purpose to encourage the sport of sailing, promote the science of seamanship and navigation, sponsor cruises, races, and instructional classes and to foster a spirit of cooperation and good fellowship. Their commitment to our sport, way of life, and community is exemplified by the many programs which are open to the general public like the “Learn to Sail” program which has introduced more than 10,000 local children to the sport of sailing over the years. All of the programs are sanctioned by the US Sailing Association and always look to incorporate the local community. For more information on the Club please visit www.cgsc.org

BOAT PROFILE – MELGES 20

The Melges 20 was envisioned and built as an easy boat to sail with great performance and sleek sexy lines. Judging from the success they have enjoyed, it hit the mark spot on as it is fast becoming a benchmark in the small 20-foot sportboat range. Part of the Melges 20 appeal is the lack of restrictions in crew weight or sailmaker, low load sheets that makes it easier for individuals of all ages, physique, and skill while maintaining a strict one design boat and rig. Thanks to the support of a great sponsor such as is the case of Audi, the Melges 20 US Series is one not to be missed. The first event was held in Miami last December and was a great success. This coming weekend CGSC will host the second regatta and BACARDI Miami Sailing Week will conclude the Miami Winter Series. The Series will then move north and will stop in Charleston, Detroit and Toronto before the Nationals and the Fall Championship. For more information on the boat & the Class please visit Melges20.com.
