Sailors for the sea

This year the Bacardi Miami Sailing Week has pledged their commitment to Sailors for the Sea’s Clean Regattas Program. What this means is that leading up to, during and following this year’s regatta, your regatta organizers will be working with Sailors for the Sea to minimize the impact that the event will have on the shores and the seas.

We are off to a great start, but we need your help. As a sailor in this event, you will be on the front lines as we work to keep these waters clear. Every choice and action can make a difference. Here are a few ways you can help during the race:

• Keep it Clean – Hold on to any trash or recycling until you can dispose of it properly. If you see any debris on shore or sea, pick it up and throw it away.
• Pump it Out – If necessary, empty your holding tanks before traveling to the event. Retain waste onboard until you can get to a pumpout station or boat.
• Rinse it Down – Clean your boat using water (no soap) during the event. Deck soaps contain phosphates and nitrates that can dramatically affect water quality, especially in a harbor full of regatta boats.
• Reduce, Reuse, Recycle – For example, use fewer water bottles by reusing a single one, and recycle anything that can’t be reused. At every opportunity, try to find a way to reduce your individual impact on the sea.

Bacardi Sailing Week has committed to carry out 5 of the following practices:

GREEN TEAM - Assemble a volunteer team to help carry out Clean Regattas

WATER BOTTLE REDUCTION - Reduce single-use, disposable water bottle use

RECYCLING - Provide and promote recycling services

PAPER - Use 100% post-consumer recycled paper or using an electronic registration service

BIODEGRADABLE PRODUCTS - Use durable or biodegradable products for all event activities

Thank you for your help as we work together for a cleaner ocean!
